Bed Linen Need-to-Knows
Thread count, sateen or percale, Egyptian cotton, fitted sheet depth - here's what actually makes a difference to how your bed linen looks and feels.
Thread Count, Explained
Thread count is the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric. A higher count usually means a smoother, denser feel, but the quality of the cotton matters just as much. Around 180-200 feels crisp and breathable, 400 feels silky smooth, and 800 is properly luxurious.
Sateen or Percale?
Sateen is woven to put more threads on the surface, giving a soft, silky feel and a gentle sheen. Percale has a simple, tight weave that feels crisp, cool and matt, like a hotel sheet. Love a smooth, cosy feel? Go for sateen. Tend to sleep warm? Percale is your friend.
Egyptian Cotton
Egyptian cotton is prized for its long fibres, which spin into a yarn that's soft, strong and gets softer with every wash. It's a lovely choice if you want bed linen that feels better the longer you have it.
Getting the Right Fitted Sheet
Measure your mattress depth before you buy. A standard fitted sheet suits most mattresses, but deeper and pillow-top mattresses need an extra-deep fitted sheet so the corners stay put all night.
