Duvets & Pillows Need-to-Knows

Tog ratings, goose down versus duck feather, natural fillings, memory foam pillows - choosing the right duvet and pillow shouldn't require a degree. We've kept things simple and straight, so you can work out whether a goose down duvet, a duck feather duvet, or something else entirely is the right fit for how you sleep. No jargon, no fuss - just the stuff that's genuinely useful to know.

Tog Ratings

Tog measures how well a duvet traps warmth - the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet. It's nothing to do with weight; a lightweight down duvet can be warmer than a heavier synthetic one. For most UK bedrooms, 10.5 tog works year-round, 4.5 is ideal for summer, and 13.5 is for cold sleepers or anyone who likes to feel properly cocooned.

Goose vs Duck

Both use a blend of feather and down - feathers for structure, down for warmth. Goose down clusters are larger, so they trap more air and feel lighter and loftier at the same tog rating. Duck is still a lovely natural filling and more affordable - the difference is real but subtle.

Natural Fillings

Feather and down breathe with your body temperature, absorbing moisture when you're warm and releasing it as you cool - so you stay comfortable through the night. They also last far longer than synthetic fills (10–15 years vs 3–5) and feel lighter at the same warmth. They do need a gentle wash and thorough dry to stay at their best, and aren't suited to anyone with feather allergies.

Choosing the Right Pillow

Your sleeping position matters more than how soft you like it. Side sleepers need a firmer, thicker pillow to keep the neck aligned; back sleepers suit medium-firm; and front sleepers need something thin and soft. Memory foam holds your neck in a neutral position and suits side and back sleepers well, while feather and down pillows offer a softer, more traditional feel but flatten over time.
